
Starting September 22, 2025, India will implement a significant overhaul of its Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. The new structure simplifies the tax slabs to two main rates—5% and 18%—with a special 40% rate for select luxury and “sin” goods. ✅ What Gets Cheaper
🛒 Daily Essentials
- Food Items: Staple foods such as roti, paratha, butter, ghee, cheese, condensed milk, and paneer will see a reduction in GST, with some items becoming tax-free.
- Packaged Foods: Products like biscuits, chocolates, cornflakes, pasta, and namkeens will now attract a 5% GST, down from 12–18%.
- Beverages: Non-aerated drinks, including tender coconut water and fruit juices, will be taxed at 5%, reduced from 18%.
🧴 Personal Care & Household Items
- Toiletries & Cosmetics: Items like shampoo, soap, toothpaste, face powder, and shaving cream will be taxed at 5%, down from 12–18%.
- Household Goods: Products such as bicycles, kitchenware, tableware, and bamboo furniture will also benefit from the 5% GST rate.
🏥 Healthcare & Insurance
- Medicines & Medical Devices: Life-saving drugs and essential medical devices will see a GST reduction to 5% or become tax-free.
- Insurance Premiums: Individual life and health insurance policies, including family floater plans, will no longer attract any GST.
🚗 Consumer Goods & Electronics
- Appliances: Air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers will have their GST reduced to 18%, down from 28%.
- Automobiles: Small cars (up to 1,200 cc) and motorcycles (up to 350 cc) will now be taxed at 18%, reduced from 28%.
🏨 Hospitality & Travel
- Hotel Rooms: Hotel rooms with tariffs up to ₹7,500 per day will attract a 5% GST, reduced from 12%.
- Air Travel: Economy class flight tickets will see a reduction in GST from 18% to 5%, while business class tickets will be taxed at 12%, down from 18%.

🚬 Luxury & “Sin” Goods
- Tobacco Products: Items like cigarettes, pan masala, gutkha, and bidis will be taxed at a higher rate of 40%, up from 28%.
- Aerated & Sugary Beverages: Carbonated drinks and beverages containing added sugar or sweeteners will also fall under the 40% GST slab.
- Luxury Vehicles: High-end cars and motorcycles exceeding 350 cc will be subject to the 40% GST rate.
